Notebooks & Pens is a passionate community of recurring donors that provides vital and sustainable support to advance Cave Canem’s mission. Recurring donors receive a monthly recording of an original poem by a Black poet and experience gatherings throughout the year, bringing them closer to Cave Canem’s programs and writers.

Getting Word: Black Literature for Liberation

In 2020, Cave Canem initiated the historic collaboration, collectively known as Getting Word: Black Literature for Liberation, among five Black literary organizations: Cave Canem, Furious Flower Poetry Center, The Hurston/Wright Foundation, Obsidian: Literature & Arts in the African Diaspora and The Watering Hole. The collective was formed as a proactive response in raising awareness of and calling for the long-term monetary support of Black literary arts organizations in light of the increased calls for social justice in 2020 and support of Black owned and led businesses. A hallmark of their collaboration is an annual fundraiser, the proceeds of which are equitably distributed among the member organizations, reinforcing their collective commitment to sustainability and shared success.
