Hear three brilliant Cave Canem fellows read work from their debut collections. Aricka Foreman is the author of Salt Body Shimmer (YesYes Books, April 2020), described by Luther Hughes of Shade Literary Arts as “Lyrical and rife with utterance[…]Interior driven and intimately political.” Dave Harris, whose work is praised by Marty Rosen for being “fearless in its scope and means,” is a poet and playwright, winner of the 2018 Rattle Poetry Prize and author of Patricide (Button Poetry, 2019). Recipient of a 2018 Lexi Rudnitsky First Book Prize, Valencia Robin‘s full-length collection, Ridiculous Light (Persea Books, 2019), “illuminates in utterly lyrical and necessary ways,” as said by Patricia Smith. Aricka Foreman is a poet, essayist, editor and educator from Detroit, MI. Author of Salt Body Shimmer (YesYes Books, April 2020) and Dream with a Glass Chamber (YesYes Books, 2016), she serves as the Board of Directors President for The Offing, a literary magazine dedicated to elevating marginalized voices within the literary and arts landscapes. Her poems, essays and features have appeared in The Offing, Buzzfeed, Vinyl, RHINO, The Blueshift Journal, Day One, shuf Poetry, James Franco Review, THRUSH, Please Excuse This Poem: 100 New Poems for the Next Generation (Viking Penguin), among others. She lives in Chicago.
Dave Harris is a poet and playwright from West Philly. He is the Tow Playwright-in-Residence at Roundabout Theatre Company. His play EXCEPTION TO THE RULE will have its world premiere at Roundabout Underground in spring 2020. Honors include: the 2019 Ollie Award, The Lorraine Hansberry Award and Mark Twain Award from The Kennedy Center, The International Commendation for The Bruntwood Prize, the 2018 Venturous Fellowship from The Lark, Cave Canem poetry fellowship, and a semi-finalist for The Relentless Award, among others. His poem “Turbulence” won the 2018 Rattle Poetry Prize. His first full-length collection of poetry, Patricide, was published in May 2019 from Button Poetry. Dave received his B.A. from Yale University and is a third year MFA playwright at UC San Diego.
Valencia Robin’s first collection of poems, Ridiculous Light (Persea Books, 2019), won Persea Books’ 2018 Lexi Rudnitsky First Book Prize and was named one of Library Journal’s Best Books for 2019. A visual artist as well as a poet, her poetry has appeared in the New York Times, TriQuarterly, Foundry, the St. Petersburg Review, Black Renaissance Noire, Kweli and elsewhere. Says the New York Times, “The narrative lyrics in this debut collection travel from intimate to socio-historical and back again, finding room for routine wonders.” Says the San Francisco Chronicle: “These are praise poems for a dark time, musical poems that conjure up stories, transcendent poems to give to your mother, your lover, your friends, yourself.” A Cave Canem Fellow, Valencia Robin holds a MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Virginia and a MFA in Art & Design from the University of Michigan.
